Truth in Advertising Came Out of Dallas

With the sixth largest metro in the United States, Dallas is big. But, when it comes to advertising, Dallas has a legacy that continues to shape how we do business today.

  • “Truth in Advertising” movement was set in motion at the AACOA’s Dallas convention in 1912
  • The Advertising Code of American Business was created in Dallas through the Dallas Ad League
  • The Better Business Bureau was created in Dallas

Dallas Designer Turned Ad Man: Stan Richards

The city has a legacy of legendary talent. Possibly the most famous of which is designer turned ad man, Stan Richards, founder of The Richards Group. Stan is most proud of his radio spots for the no-frills motel chain, Motel 6’s, “We’ll leave the Light on for You.” But, his firm handles clients from San Francisco to Yarmouth, Maine, and has received awards in virtually every major competition in the world.

His agency, The Richards Group, was named “agency of the year” four times by Adweek. He was named “entrepreneur of the year” by Inc. magazine, was inducted into the Art Directors Hall of Fame, and The University of Texas renamed it’s nationally recognized advertising program the Stan Richards School of Advertising and Public Relations.

After starting The Richard’s Group in 1976, Stan took the role of team builder and helped nurture some amazing careers including that of Woody Pirtle, Rex Peteet, Jack Summerford, Don Sibley, Cap Panell, Arthur Eisenberg, Jerry Herring and Mark Perkins.

Pentagram partner, Woody Pirtle, has called him “the ideal businessman, salesman, teacher, and mentor.” Rex Peteet of SP Design has called him “my cheerleader, my muse, my conscience, my dad, my friend, my critic, my enemy—all in the same day.”
