Does your agency have a cool origin story?

It all started with a hang glider and countless experiments in aerial photography. Scary times, but things took off from there. In 1996, Ulrich Grill, a professional Austrian photographer and Red Bull sponsored hang-gliding pilot, started a photo service, which provided the latest Red Bull athlete and events photography to media outlets around the world*. For that purpose, he founded our agency ZOOOM Productions, just a stone’s throw away from Red Bull’s International Headquarters in Austria.

Our agency soon expanded its portfolio from photo services to positioning & branding, campaign development, and digital, and took on new sports & lifestyle clients in Europe. In 2006, we decided to open up a boutique agency in the US. That’s how we ended up in Venice Beach, California, the perfect spot to stay on the pulse of new trends, collaborate with talent from around the world, and get a better handle on surfing.

*The photo service is now called Red Bull Content Pool and run by the Red Bull Media House.

See any trends, LA Natives VS Transplants?

We have two LA natives, the rest of us are transplants from various parts of the US, Austria & the UK.

Most Interesting Physical Thing in Our Office?

A 1976 Honda CB500T Motorcycle, restored by one of the Art Directors. He found the bike in a shed in La Habra, CA and rebuilt it leaving the exterior patina as is. The tank was hand painted with patterns of old Native American Teepees. The bike is hibernating at our office due to the owner’s lack of garage space. It gets taken in and out of the office by placing an old door on the stairs and gunning the throttle.

In 10 Words or Less, What We Do for Our Clients:

Building brands through relevant positioning, creative design & content production.

3 Characteristics We Look for in Potential Clients:

First and foremost: integrity. We need to identify with our clients’ vision and believe in the products and services they offer. This in turn enables us to create authentic and credible campaigns that connect to consumers on an emotional level. Other than that, we’re looking for trustworthiness and open communication. Our clients expect the same from us – and rightly so.

LA Confidential

LA is known for entertainment (Hollywood, TV Shows, Games, etc.), how does your agency engage with the LA scene?

We mostly specialize in sports & youth marketing and chose LA, because it’s a mecca for athletes and active lifestyle brands. As for entertainment projects, we collaborated with Sony and Braun on a b-boy movie sponsorship, developed a game for the X-Box BDE (Branded Destination Environment), and created websites for filmmakers such as Gonzalo Amat, the cinematographer of ‘The Man in the High Castle’.

How do you view the creative landscape in LA? How is it different from other major cities?

Los Angeles has always been a hotbed for the entertainment industry, yet, its agency scene is catching fire as well. We witness a large influx of talent from the East Coast, most notably from New York, and Europe (Sweden, Germany, etc.). Silicon Beach is growing stronger by the day, and tech start ups are popping up everywhere. People come for the fun, sun, and opportunity – and many of them get stuck in LA. Who can blame them?

The #1 Thing We Love About LA:

The blue sky – after a heavy rainfall.

Best Food Spot in LA?

As for our four-legged employees that’s The Dog Bakery in Venice. Everyone else prefers Gjusta on Sunset Ave or the La Isla Bonita foodtruck.

What does #agencylife mean to you?

We prefer hashtags such as #MisheardLyrics, #carsofvenicebeach and #powderday.
