What makes Propane Studio unique?
Our goal is to deliver a complete digital ecosystem for our clients. What makes us unique is that we don’t stop once we’ve delivered a standard suite such as a website or mobile app. Instead, we stay engaged and deliver innovation and ideas focused on how we can make your business more effective and efficient through digital means.
Some of our engagements have led us to create marketing automation tools, adaptive content platforms, customer portals, business intelligence, marketing software that connects to inventory management – anything that improves your overall customer experience. In short, we don’t just push out digital marketing for brands, we create “pull” that empowers brands to build long-lasting customer relationships before and after the purchase.
What’s on the innovation horizon for e-commerce experiences?
Anything is possible, but a few interesting things that we’re working on include:
Artificial Content Management Platform: This is the beginning of Skynet…kidding. It is a bit like a mind reader that figures out where the consumer is in the buying cycle and promotes the right content in order to move them down the path to purchase or engage. Like most things, we as consumers go through various milestones when we make decisions. This CMS approach identifies that very milestone and then dynamically serves the right content to move them to the next adjacent milestone. You don’t want to skip ahead too soon, and you don’t want to get in the way of the buyer progression.
Customer Portals: Some products are fortunate to be bought regularly enough to stay top of mind at all times, but for those that are not, brands need to engage with customers between purchases. Customer portals that help [customers] manage their experience between purchases (such as maintenance reminders for their car or discovering new artists for concert ticketing companies) will not only help brands stay top of mind, but also give existing customers the tools they need to advocate for you to their friends. Platforms aren’t the exclusive realm of technology companies anymore.
If Propane Studio could revive one defunct website, what would it be and why?
If we could bring back a site it would have to be Google health. They closed the service down and as a result we have been trying to build out a new patient-owned medical records website on our own. We feel like building the site is not hard, but getting the health care industry to take it as a creditable source of medical information would be another issue. We like to tackle very difficult problems, and this one is a good example of that.

1 Milestone
You’ve probably heard about The Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare. You’ve also probably heard that the federal government’s site didn’t work at launch and cost nearly $1 billion to build.
We build the digital healthcare exchange for Kaiser Permanente, one of the country’s largest private insurers. Ours launched on time, on budget, and in full compliance with the new law. And it cost less than 1% what the federal government paid. It was a massive undertaking, all done here, in-house, so now millions of Americans have access to Kaiser Permanente’s coverage.
